Glass ampoules are still the most commonly used
recepticles in which to store injection solutions.
The process of opening ampoules prior to use can pose a risk of
contamination caused by poor aseptic technique, and also, by tiny
fragments of glass being deposited in the solution.
Published data eminating from various Italian groups has made
reference to this problem.
A further risk may be posed by the fact that glass splinters derive
mainly from the external face of ampoules, which can carry an
invisible layer of microbial contamination. Additionally, shelving
or other surfaces on which ampoules are stored can harbour bacteria.
Ampoules containing injection solution are subjected to repeated
handling prior to use and therefore the opportunity for contamination
to occur, in the process of preparing parenteral therapy cannot
be ignored.
Contamination, caused by glass splinters or microbial infestation
may contribute either in combination, or separately, to granulomatous
lesions found in various organs of pareterally treated patients.
